Aim: The place where microorganisms grow is what is called habitat. In patients with dentures there is a predominance of Lactobacillus, Streptococci and Candida species, which can cause mucosal lesions, although this tissue has a defense mechanism against microbial attacks. The main purpose of this study is to determine the microbial growth, to assess the level of hygiene applied, and evaluate the behavior of the oral mucosa in patients with dentures. Methods: Cohort study, sample = 23 cases of all patients that attended the area of Prosthodontics of UNIBE’s Dental Clinic, located in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, to which dentures were prepared, during the period of January 2010 to December 2011. Microbiological cultures were performed in different media, and the data analyzed in SPSS 19. Results: In Kruskal–Wallis and Chi Square Test, not significant differences were established between the cultures media used to determine the growth of microorganisms. The patients with superior dentures had a similar level of microorganisms at 4 and 6 months (Streptococcus, Diplococcusgram neg. and Candida). Roughness factors of dentures and oral hygine promote the proliferation of Candida. An isolated case of Pseudomona in our findings is of concern because of the systemic and oral cavity infections it can cause.en
